Dear Parents,
Sunday, September 15th is International Dot Day. On Friday, after listening to The Dot, an inspiring story of a little girl who is challenged by her teacher to trust in her own abilities, the children were asked to think of a way to could create their own "dot picture." They loved it! The pictures will be on display outside of our classroom, and if you get the chance, please take a look!
This week in math we will move on in Unit 2, Addition and Subtraction, to Ch. 2 - Sum and Difference. In this unit, we will learn to draw models that represent mathematical statements. Two types of models will be introduced: a part-whole model using one bar, and a comparison model using two or more bars. Modeling is a tool that can be used to solve problems. Students will be taught to draw these models and through practice become skilled with the modeling process.
In reading this week, students will learn to give themselves a comprehension check as they read by asking questions making sure they understand what is going on in their books. Sometimes they will need to envision or make movies in their mind, and other times collect information. I will continue to assess students to find their “just right” reading levels.
Students have picked their “seed” idea in writing last week and began the work to grow this idea into something wonderful, trying to make it feel like a published book.
In science last week we solved the mystery, 'Why do plants grow fruit?' We saw how fruit is a tasty container for seeds, and how all fruits are simply one part of a flower (the ovary). You can help support this learning by involving your child when cutting vegetables or fruits. Ask them, “What should I look for, to know if what I’m cutting was once part of the flower?” (Answer: Look for seeds!)
Have a great week!
Ms. Anne Raymond
