HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEK
Mystery Skype to Buenos Aires, Argentina and Pen Pals
5th graders traveled 6,000 virtual miles when they Mystery Skyped a class from Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷last Monday. Students worked as a team and exercised their geography skills so effectively that after guessing the country correctly in only 8 questions, they were able to use road maps to go further and identify their city! Afterwards, the class got to practice writing in Spanish as they composed postcards to be sent to the students they connected with in Argentina. 🌎
Blessing of the Pets
Experimenting in Science
On Monday students planned an investigation to discover the factors affecting decomposition. We filled Ziploc bags with different types of foods. Each group selected one environmental condition to change in order to study how different variables affect mold growth. We are observing this mold growth over a two week period to discover the role fungi play in decomposing dead materials and in creating soil. The class has been enjoying watching this yucky stuff grow.
Skype with Salva Dut
Friday morning was a special and exciting time! Students from the class of 2019 returned to campus to meet Salva Dut, the subject of the book A Long Walk to Water and founder of Water for South Sudan. Salva called in to share more about his organization and celebrate the establishment of the well that was drilled as a result of their fundraising while in 5th Grade two years ago. Our class was so excited to join on the call and meet Salva after just finishing the book on Thursday. They were able to ask questions and learn more from the man behind the story. We were all inspired by the positive messages he shared. You can view our highlighted story on Instagram with more pictures and video here.
Writing in the Park
We had our second trip to the park for Writing on Friday. We'll have published work to share with you this week.
