Last week in math we reviewed the multiplication and division taught in 2nd grade. This week we will move on to multiplication and division word problems using bar models to help us solve them. We will also make the switch from practicing addition or subtraction facts to multiplication facts beginning on Monday. We are aiming to memorize these facts. This will be crucial when we move on to long division and fractions later. I will send home pages of facts that can be cut into flashcards for practice at home.
Early this week in social studies we will review what a community is, the different kinds of communities (urban, suburban, and rural), and practicing how to measure distances on a map using a map scale as we prepare for a test on Thursday. I encourage the students to review the lessons for homework, so I will send home the textbook each night with suggestions on what to review.
In writing last week we took a short break from Writer's Workshop to write letters of appreciation to our service members who will be away from home during the holidays.
We are looking forward to our field trip to Symphony Hall on Tuesday. Students are to wear their uniform. We will be leaving school by bus about 10:45 AM and will return approximately 12:45 PM. Because it will be a later lunchtime, I suggest a hearty breakfast to get your child through the morning.
Thank you, Anthea Rodgers, for the wonderful art history lesson on Surrealism on Friday. We learned about the artwork of Dali, Magritte, Breton, and Miro. During the art activity, students designed their own surreal art work using ideas from our lesson. These will be sent home this week in your child's Friday folder.
The Harvest Festival was such fun! Thank you for all you do to support our students and our school!
Have a safe and happy Halloween!!
