Dear Jr. Kindergarten Parents,
I’m looking forward to seeing you and your children soon! In this letter, I will give you a few details about the first weeks of school.
The day before school begins, on Tuesday, August 20, there will be a CCDS Sneak Peek and the classrooms will be open from 1-3 p.m. I encourage you to bring your child to visit the classroom, look around, find places in the room where his or her name is posted and begin to become familiar with the Junior Kindergarten. Please let your child know that this is a time for looking only. There will be lots of time to play with the toys in the coming days. Hopefully, attending the Sneak Peek will make “drop-off” the next day easier for both you and your child.
That evening there will be a New Parent Orientation in Hinde Hall at 5:30 p.m. This is a great way to become familiar with Christ Church Day School and meet our Head of School, Mrs. Nancy Funk.
On the first day of school, Wednesday, August 21, the JK classroom will be open at 7:45 a.m. I will greet you and your child at the door, show you both where the snacks and backpacks are stored, and invite you to come into the classroom for a “Welcome to JK” photo! You may then look around the classroom briefly, but no more than 5 minutes, please. You will be able to tour the classroom again during Back to School Night on Thursday, September 5. Activities will be set up for your child during this “Settling In” time, so please encourage him or her to begin playing with one of them before you leave.
I want to foster independence right from the start, so beginning with the second day of school, and all days after this, please say “goodbye” to your child on the porch in front of the JK. I will be there to guide the children in unpacking their belongings, but all children will be expected to unpack their backpacks by themselves. They will then go into the classroom without you for “Settling In” time. The children feel proud when they can do these things on their own.
The classroom will open every day at 7:45 a.m. It will not be open before this time because I will be setting things up for the day. Remember that school begins at 7:55, so please be prompt.
This is the “pick-up” schedule for the first three weeks of school:
The first week, you will pick up your child at the JK classroom at 11:55 (five minutes before the rest of the school dismisses). This means that the children will eat lunch at home. Just send a snack (labeled with name) that week.
The second week, the children will eat lunch at school just before going home, so be sure to send a snack and a lunch in separate containers, each labeled with your child’s name. That week, you will pick your child up at 12:25.
The third week of school begins a full day schedule – 7:55 a.m. until 2:50 p.m. We dismiss 5 minutes before the rest of the school in order to help reduce traffic congestion.
Wednesday is early pick-up each week. So the JK school day ends at 2:10 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Starting with the third week of school, the children should bring a snack, a lunch, as well as a beach towel (regular size, not extra large please) and a small stuffed animal for rest time. Be sure that your child’s backpack is large enough to carry all of these items. Regular size school backpacks, rather than mini-backpacks, work best.
I know that this is a lot of information to take in at once, but don’t worry, I will be sending you reminder e-mails to help you remember all of the details. I can’t wait to see you all!
Mrs. Mary LeDuc
Jr. Kindergarten Teacher
