Dear JK Families,
Last week we began our school-wide reading program. Mystery Readers visited, we had DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) Time, and the children dressed as their favorite book characters! This week the children will have a special reading time with their 5th Grade Buddies and more Mystery Readers will visit!
Since R was our Letter of the Week, we focused not only on reading, but also on rainbows. The children learned about how rainbows are formed and sang a song about the colors. We also watched an episode of Reading Rainbow (the featured book: Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe by Vera B. Williams).
This week, we will be preparing for St. Patrick’s Day fun which we will be celebrating on March 17. Some of our activities will include:
Reading books with a St. Patrick’s Day theme, including “St. Patrick” by Gail Gibbons (the life and works of the saint)
Learning that St. Patrick used the shamrock as an illustration of the Holy Trinity – three persons in one God (the children will sing a song about this)
Learning about the legend of the leprechaun
Making shamrocks and lively, fun-loving leprechauns
To go along with that theme, our Letter of the Week will be L for Leprechaun.
