Dear JK Families,
Last week, the children enjoyed learning about the life-cycle of plants, naming the parts of a flower (roots, stem, leaves, petals), and planting lima beans in glass jars so we can watch the life cycle happening right in our classroom! A special thanks to Mariana and Ana for helping the children to plant more flowers and seeds in the JK garden. Be sure to take a look at our garden to see what’s new!
Tomorrow, March 2, is Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and marks the kick-off of the school-wide reading program. During “March is Reading Month” we will be emphasizing reading in the classroom in various ways. For instance, we will have DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time. The children choose three or four books and find a cozy corner of the room to have uninterrupted reading time. Reading words, re-telling the story to themselves or imagining the stories as they look through the book are all ways that children read during this time. The children will also have special reading times with their 5th grade buddies. The Scholastic Book Fair will be in Hinde Hall all week. Be sure to stop by to shop for books for your child. Of course, our Letter of the Week will be R for Reading!
Let me know if you would like to be a Mystery Reader and read a favorite book to the class sometime during the month of March. I will schedule a time for you and we’ll keep it a secret from the children. It’s always fun to discover who our Mystery Reader is that day!
