Junior Kindergarten
Dear JK Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you have had lots of special family time during the Christmas break!
We had fun the week before the break talking all about winter! The children learned that some animals hibernate, some migrate and some adapt to the cold winter weather. “Are You Sleeping, Little Bear?” was our theme song (ask your child to sing it for you).
We also began our Letter of the Week activities. The children drew pictures of things that begin with the “w” sound and practiced writing W's. They also point out and circle the Letter of the Week in the News of the Day notes and in their I Can Read Anthology entries. Thank you for encouraging them to do their Letter of the Week homework. They love sharing it with us during Circle Time!
Continuing with a winter theme, this week's Letter of the Week will be “s” for snow and snowflakes. The children will learn about a man called “Snowflake Bentley” who studied snowflakes his entire life. We will also cut out snowflake designs using coffee filters and make “snow” in the classroom!
Since January 6 is the Feast of the Epiphany, commemorating the visit of the Three Kings to the baby Jesus, we will have a Three Kings Day celebration in the classroom tomorrow. This will include a Rosca de Reyes (Three Kings Cake) baked in the form of a crown, and a small treat for each of the children to symbolize the gifts left by the Wise Men for the baby Jesus.
