Dear JK Families,
The first day of winter is next Saturday, December 21! The children have been looking for signs of the changing seasons during nature walks and especially in the Liquid Amber trees near our school. They have seen the leaves change from the green of summer to the colors of autumn. Last week, we noticed that many more leaves have fallen because it’s almost winter! They have documented these changes in their Science Notebooks. In class, we will read about animals that hibernate, migrate, or adapt during the cold winter months.
This week, as we talk about winter, the children will learn that the word “winter” begins with the letter “w.” They will find things around them that begin with the letter “w” and illustrate what they have found. Using the Handwriting Without Tears program, the children will learn to write the Letter of the Week.
From now on, the JK will be featuring a Letter of the Week and a specific topic centered around that letter. Look for the “Letter of the Week” homework in your child’s backpack on Monday. Please make every effort to have your child complete the homework. Reinforcing the letters at home each week really accelerates the learning process for your child.
This Wednesday, December 18, is a free dress day for the school. The children may wear play clothes with a Christmas theme or colors. They must also wear tennis shoes since it is a PE day.
This Friday, December 20, will be a half-day and the students will wear their dress uniforms (long pants for the boys, jumpers for the girls and red sweaters for all). There is no need to bring snacks or backpacks on this day (snacks will be provided). They will arrive at school at the usual time and then, at 11 a.m., the school will have what is known as “Closing Chapel” or the last Chapel service before the Christmas break. It will include songs, a candle lighting, and a Nativity play performed by the Senior Kindergarten. All parents are encouraged to attend this special Chapel. Following the service, everyone will gather around the flagpole for the Pledge of Allegiance. After this (around 11:45-12), the whole school will be dismissed for the holidays and you may pick your child up there. School resumes on January 6.
Have a wonderful Christmas with all of your loved ones!
Many blessings to you all,
School Wide Events
