Dear JK Families,
Preparing for Christmas during the season of Advent is a wonderful time in the JK classroom! Every morning, I light our classroom Advent wreath before we pray. After this, we add another piece to the Advent calendar on the wall. The children enjoy playing with the figures in the manger scene and they have also been adding illustrations of their daily acts of kindness (“birthday presents for Jesus”) to our classroom Sparkle Box.
On Friday, I finished reading the E.B. White book, The Trumpet of the Swan, to the children during rest time. They were excited to watch the animated video of this story that afternoon. Our next rest time book will be Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater.
As you know, the children learned to measure objects using non-standard units earlier in the year. This week, they will have fun measuring using inch rulers and measuring tapes. The homework this week suggests ways that the children can practice this skill at home.
This Thursday is our all school Christmas Concert. For this event, the students will wear dress uniforms which include long pants and dark socks for the boys, jumpers for the girls, and red sweaters for all. On that evening, Mrs. K and I will be in front of the Hinde Hall steps at 5:45 p.m. where the JK children will gather. If you arrive before that time, be sure to stay with your child until 5:45. After that, you can find seating in the church. Following the program, you will also pick up your child from the Hinde Hall steps.
Friday, December 20, will be a half-day and the students will wear their dress uniforms. There is no need to bring snacks or backpacks on this day (snacks will be provided). They will arrive at school at the usual time and then, at 11 a.m., the school will have what is known as “Closing Chapel” or the last Chapel service before the Christmas break. It will include songs, candle lighting, and a Nativity play performed by the Senior Kindergarten. All parents are encouraged to attend this special Chapel. Following the service, everyone will gather around the flagpole for the Pledge of Allegiance. After this, the whole school will be dismissed for the holidays and you may pick your child up there.
