We are about to make our classroom an exciting adventure in history! In Social Studies, we have started our unit of study on America as a nation of immigrants and how our ancestors came here to live. Your child has been assigned two home projects: Family Tree and Interview.
Due Monday, Feb. 3rd
In your child's Friday Folder, there are instructions and everything needed for two home projects. First project is a Family Tree. Please fill out your child’s Family Tree for your child. Do not worry if you cannot fill out all the circles. Just do as much as you can. Do not worry about birth dates, but instead I would like to have birthplaces written in the circles. I will use this information to decide which flag of an ancestor’s homeland your child will make, and I will also connect your child’s name to a map of the world (that will be on a classroom bulletin board) that will show where all our ancestors came from.
Due Monday, Feb. 3rd
The second home project is an interview. Your child will interview a grandparent or an older person in your family. In the Friday Folder is the interview questions. Your child will write down the answers on the sheet provided. If your child needs more space, you can add lined paper and attach. Please assist your child with the interview.
On the Horizon...
In addition, the 2nd grade will put on an evening presentation in March (TBA), which will involve reading a journal of their ancestor’s life and sharing family heritages. Please start think of someone among your child’s ancestors that was an immigrant, or a famous or interesting person, or perhaps someone special in your family. I will be asking for 1-2 page autobiography of this person (written in the first person) and then a parent who could portray this person the night of the performance. The parent who is portraying the ancestor will sit behind a giant picture frame dressed as their ancestor. After the performance, we will eat desserts from various countries the children’s ancestors are from.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call or send a note and I’ll be happy to explain further.
Thanks so much for your help with these family projects!
