Dear Parents,
This week we learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. and why on January 20th we remember him and the things he believed in. We discussed big concepts like: segregation, justice, equality, nonviolence, protest, and boycotting. The kids also watched part of "I Have a Dream" 1963 speech. You may want to ask your child if they have any more lingering questions regarding MLK, the things he believed in, or why the speech was so important.
On the Horizon...
Congratulations to the 2nd and 3rd grade who won a crazy hair and sock day next Friday, January 24th for reaching an APEX goal as a class. Thank you to all the parents, friends, and relatives that supported our fundraiser for new play equipment and other items.
Scholastic News is having a graphic novel character contest. There were several interested students in the contest and I promised I'd send the information home in the newsletter. Please refer to the poster for the particulars. I did tell the kids that if they brought their finished project in that I'd be happy to mail it.
Next week I'll be sending home a Social Studies project where your child will interview an older family member to learn where your ancestors lived before they immigrated to the United States, what life was like long ago, and learn more about their family. We are preparing for Ancestor Night, which is the culmination of this unit.
The class have been working really hard on memorizing their multiplication facts-I'm so proud of them!! There is two more weeks for the Multiplication Challenge. After we conclude the challenge, we will have an ice cream celebration (TBA) in the courtyard.
