December 9th Newsletter
Thanks for all your help at the bake sale on Friday. Grateful to you all for your support. It looked like the kids had a great time, and they were able to raise $771 to donate to the Navajo Water Project! They're going to all be so excited to hear how successful the bake sale was.
- We, along with 3rd Grade, will be heading to the Birch Aquarium on January 7th. We'll be attending the "Creatures of the Kelp" workshop. Please complete this permission slip this week and submit payment to the office by 12/16. Thank you!
- We're all set for drivers to the Birch Aquarium, but we are in need of volunteer drivers/chaperones on February 4th when we're hoping to go to the Water Conservation Garden. I'm sure February feels far off, but it'll be just a few weeks away when we return from break which is why I'd like to confirm drivers ahead of time. Can you consider driving for this field trip? If you can drive and chaperone on February 4th, please complete this form.
- I'll see you Thursday night at the Christmas Concert! Students should report to our classroom at 5:45pm in uniform with red sweaters.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEK
Pen Pals in Argentina
We received letters from our pen pals in Argentina. We had fun reading them in class, and we're now working on responses. After drafting a written response in Spanish, students will work on their pronunciation and record a video to share.
Fraction Baking Activity
Students applied what they've been learning in math by halving a chocolate chip cookie recipe. They had to calculate fractions of a whole or fractions of a fraction accurately in order to keep the ingredients in proportion and produce a good-tasting cookie.
This week we connected with a 5th grade class in McCall, Idaho and an 8th grade class in Cainville, Wisconsin. We had some extra time after finding the state of Wisconsin, so the class was able to use additional resources to narrow the location down further. Ultimately, they were able to correctly narrow the location down to their town. We've now traveled to 7 states in America!
Picture Book Advent Calendar and Creative Writing
We are all really enjoying the picture book Advent calendar and the creative writing prompts. The books we read last week are pictured above. After reading The Day the Crayons Quit, we all chose an item from our desk and wrote letters to ourselves from the point of view of the desk item. They had fun with this writing assignment and did a wonderful job. We'll be publishing these letters this week and they will be shared with you in next week's newsletter.
After reading Leonardo the Terrible Monster students developed their own monster by assigning it character and physical traits, and now they are bringing their character to life as they write a story based on a prompt given in class. Each picture book triggers a writing prompt or models a writing technique. They can't wait to open and read a new book after lunch each day!
OVERVIEW OF THIS WEEK'S CLASS TOPICS
We are going to have rehearsals for the Christmas concert on Tuesday and Thursday this week so we will not be able to fit in Writing in the Park this week. Our next trip to the park for writing will be when we return from break in January.
Friendly reminder: During our class Christmas party this December, we will have a white elephant gift exchange. The cost of the gift should not exceed $15. Students are welcome to bring the present to school and place it under our class Christmas tree anytime between now and our Christmas party on 12/20. The book should be wrapped but not addressed to anyone.
