Dear Parents,
What a wonderful Christmas concert! I thought the kids sounded and looked terrific!! I really enjoyed the show last night and I hope you did too.
It's hard to believe after next week we will be heading off to Christmas break. Although I have some fun holiday events planned for next week, it will still be a learning week. In Spelling, the kids will have a spelling test on Friday like usual. Then in Math today, we started a new chapter on the concept of division, which will continue into next week. There will be an assessment on multiplication and division next Thursday. The assessment is not on whether your child knows their facts, but rather on the concepts of multiplication and division. You can help your child with these concepts by doing some fun hands on activities this weekend.
Here's some ideas:
1) multiplication war with aces through fives (two decks)
2) play Roshambo, but you put up fingers instead of rock, paper, scissors. The first partner to multiply the two sets of fingers together and call out the product gets the point
3) make arrays with m&ms
4) get pasta or pennies and divide to find the number of equal groups
In the Friday Folder there is the Unit 5: Multiplication and Division Friendly Notes. It's a back-to-back sheet that gives you a snapshot of the concepts and vocabulary we are covering in Math. It's very helpful!
In writing, the kids wrote a creative writing piece on If they were an elf on the shelf. Next week the kids will go into 1st grade and read their pieces aloud and practice their public speaking skills.
