Spiritual Nurture Classes
During Spiritual Nurture the Day School Chaplain and the children explore the meaning of the lessons presented in the chapel services in an age appropriate way. These lessons are used to support our school theme, “Friends in Faith”.
The curriculum is selected based on grade level and is lectionary based.
Junior and Senior Kindergarten – Godly Play - Godly Play teaches children the art of using religious language - parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action - helping them become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives.
Grades 1-5 – Whirl – Whirl brings kids into the life of the church with a lectionary-centered curriculum. Every Whirl lesson follows a four-part sequence: Welcome, Hear, Respond, and Launch (WHRL!). Each week, kids start their time together by identifying where they are in the church year and watching an animated video to set up the lesson. Next, they dive into the Whirl Story Bible or Whirl NRSV Bible together, respond to the scripture lesson, and circle up to review the lesson and close with prayer.
Grade 6 – Echo the Story –Our 6th graders will experience the biblical narrative in a new way. Bible stories are explored in connection with the virtue of each month. The class is encouraged to deepen their connection to their faith and their values through the use of lively discussions, creative mediums and collaborative projects. Through this exploration they will connect the stories not just to the virtues, but to their own lives.
Additionally, intentional virtues are an integral piece of our Friends in Faith program. Below is a calendar for this year’s virtues.
- September – Belonging
- October – Respect
- November – Responsibility
- December – Fairness
- January –Kindness
- February –Honesty
