Sept. 20, 2017 Spiritual Nurture Classes Make a Belonging Tree

The Belonging Tree

So even if you used to be strangers, you‘re not anymore. You are members of God’s family, descendants of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus being the foundation of it all. Through Him, we are all connected and we make up a place where God can live.

Ephesians 2:19-22

This month in Spiritual Nurture, we have been discussing the virtue of Belonging. What does it mean to belong? What groups do we belong to? What makes us feel like we belong? What does it mean to belong to God? There is a wonderful quote from Brene Brown that we have been discussing, “ If I get to be myself, I belong. If I have to be like you, I fit in. ”She was quoting a 12 year old. Our Belonging Tree embodies that thought. Each of the leaves is a child’s handprint, crafted to represent their spirit, their likes and talents, and the things that bring them joy. The placing of those leaves on the tree signifies how even with our individuality, we belong to each other. A tree isn’t fully a tree without each of its leaves. It is in the same way that we belong to each other, and to God.
