The studio art program at CCDS focuses on the major elements of art (color theory, line, shape, rhythm, composition, repetition etc.) as well as the exploration of various media including oil pastel, chalk, watercolor, tempura, clay, pen, pencil, and colored pencil. Lessons vary from technical skills (ie. perspective and shading techniques) to creative interpretations. Art styles of several famous artists are explored including Picasso, Monet, Kandinsky, O’Keefe, Jim Dine, Van Gogh, Klimt, Dr. Seuss, and Matisse.
Many of the studio art lessons also correlate with the art history program. This year 2nd-6th grades will be learning about the major art movements Art Nouveau, Cubism, Impressionism, and Gothic and the cultural art of India, Ancient Egypt, and the Maya/Inca civilization.
Kinder and 1st grade art history will focus on the various genres of art (landscape, portraits, still life) as well as the use of color, line, shape, texture, and light sources to create a piece of art.
I am looking forward to another year of color and imagination!
