....... CCDS INFORMER
Mrs. Roberts - Headmistress

Wow, what a successful, fun Golf Tournament/Dinner
Auction CCDS had last Friday. Having an event with good
friends, sharing good times and good food organized by a
stellar team for the benefit of a great little school –well it is
hard to miss with that combination. So thank you to every-
one, but especially to our Committee Co-chairs, Jackie
Scotchmer, Scott Grimes, Tami Woods and Valerie Murline!
They did a fantastic job. I would also be remiss if I did not
mention three other people, Fabiola Mestre and Brenda
Partida, who provided the decorations for the evening,
and the man behind the scenes who designed the graphics for the website, and
the many signs and flyers, for the event, John Weimann.

Now the results you are all waiting for – you raised $94,000. I believe this total
represents the high-esteem CCDS is held in by current and alumni parents, the
parishioners and community at large. While money is important, one of the best
moments of the night was the standing ovation for the teachers! I know it touched
their hearts and once again, I felt such a sense of pride in our school because of
our fine faculty. CCDS is truly blessed in so many ways.

The total amount raised breaks down this way. The Fund-an-Item was ear-marked
for staff development and came in at $15,000, $67.000 covers the fund-raising line
item in the budget, and the remaining $12,000 will go towards replenishing the
quasi-endowment fund. Once again, thank you all. You are super!

This year the Sparks Program is being fully implemented for the PE curriculum
kindergarten through 6th grade. This program was developed at San Diego State
and is used throughout San Diego Schools including Coronado Village School.
The program has three important parts. Two of those parts are related to the
structure of each lesson. The lessons begin with warm up activities and then
move into the second phase of playing a game that teaches skills,
good sportsmanship and teamwork. The third part of the program is called
My Personnel Best. About once every six to eight weeks, each student runs
through a series of skills such as pull-ups, sit ups etc. The goal is to beat their
own last assessment, not their neighbor’s scores. The program is designed to
build each child’s strength and fitness. (Of course they can always practice at
home too.) Mrs. Duryea has gone through the Sparks training, and she spent
the first three PE periods introducing the program to the students.
Mrs. Duryea is starting her thirteenth year at CCDS. With her experience,
training, and enthusiasm this should be a great year for PE and the kids!
