	CCDS has some very innovative parents, adventurous students and fun-loving teachers. The 4th grade class is a perfect example of this. Last week when their much-anticipated trip to Catalina was in jeopardy due to bad weather and the ferry trip being canceled, within an hour of meeting in the parking lot the trip was reorganized. Reservations were made on the Queen Mary for the night with an afternoon visit to an amazing aquarium. The next morning the parents and Mrs. Funk were able to make it to Catalina landing in Avalon and taking in the sights on a 2-hour bus ride to their camp site at Two-Mouth Harbor. They were able to gaze at the stars that evening and even spotted Saturn. On Friday, they squeezed in some snorkeling and kayaking before heading home via the ferry to San Pedro. I think this trip may have been better than the one originally planned! Congratulations to the 4th grade participants for the willingness to be adventurous and for making that proverbial lemonade out of lemons. The 6th grade East Coast Trip started today, and we will use the fourth grade’s attitude as our inspiration! We will keep you posted on our journey. . Mrs. Kassir and Mrs. Power will be in charge while I am gone, and they can reach me by cell phone as needed. As I am sure you realize, you are in very good hands. There will be a room rep meeting on May 5th. With the rain last night we only had two parents attending the Golf Tournament meeting. So I hope many parents, as well as our normal room reps, will plan to attend this last CCDSPA meeting of the year. Mrs. Roberts, Headmistress

	ROAD WORK ON 'C' AVENUE      Road work/street repairs this week will probably impact our drop off and pick-up procedures. Please be extra cautious. ADMISSIONS 2010-2011 IF YOU PLAN FOR YOUR CHILD TO RETURN TO CCDS NEXT YEAR, PLEASE SEND IN SIGNED CONTRACTS, DEPOSITS AND REGISTRATION FORMS. The school has begun filling student spots available in grades Junior Kindergarten through Sixth.  IT'S CAR PARKING SENSE Long-term parking near CCDS is extremely limited, and short-term parking virtually nonexistent. Extreme caution should be taken while entering and leaving the parking facilities owned by the Church on “C” Avenue. Small children should be escorted across the street by their parents. Please observe the no stopping zone between the signs in front of the school, as well as the common sense rules of no double parking or U-turns in mid-block. Parents should remain in their cars if they are in the loading zone and pull forward as cars move forward. SUMMER CHILD CARE OFFERED BY MRS. DURYEA Mrs. Duryea has a licensed child care program which she has run for the past 19 years. The summer program runs 10 weeks. Transportation to any activity (dance, sports, etc.) is included. Field trips to the beach, park, and bay keep everyone on the go. The big highlight is the backyard swimming pool/spa. The pool has taught many children to become better swimmers. Drop-in, part-time, or full-time spots are available. Spaces are limited so if interested, please call ASAP for details or to reserve a spot. Call Mrs. Duryea at 435-8989.

	We are delighted to share with you that our students will participate in a Pennies for Peace Campaign from April 12 to May 24th. Pennies for Peace is a service-learning program designed to broaden our students’ cultural horizons while teaching them about their capacities as philanthropists – one penny at a time. Pennies for Peace is a program of Central Asia Institute (CAI), founded by Greg Mortenson – author of the #1 New York Times best seller, Three Cups of Tea. CAI is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that promotes and provides community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of Central Asia. Founded in 1996, CAI has built, to date, nearly 100 schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which serve more than 28,000 students – over 14,000 of whom are girls. How can a penny bring peace? It doesn’t buy much in our community. However, in the villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan, a penny can buy a pencil, start an education, and transform a life. In a region where terrorist organizations recruit uneducated, illiterate children, that pencil can empower a child to read, write, and learn. The Pennies for Peace program goal is to encourage our students, who are ultimately our future leaders, to learn the value of philanthropy by collecting pennies for global peace. Our students will join tens of thousands of students around the world who are participating in the Pennies for Peace program and who are working together to become members of a global family dedicated to peace. 	One of the many great things about our school is the opportunity each class has to contribute to our world through a service learning project. Third grade is collecting General Mills Box Tops for Education to earn money in support of the "Earth's Birthday Project" to help protect rain forest acreage in the El Pangan rainforest in the Colombian Chocó - the wettest forest in the world, site of tremendous biological diversity, and an environmental hotspot that will disappear without help. 	Just in time for Spring cleaning, the 4th grade is having a garage sale! Saturday, May 22nd at the Wampler's house, 924 D Avenue. You can bring items to the Wampler's house, and leave them on the porch. If the items are large, (furniture, bikes, etc, please call first. 957-4894. Proceeds will go to the Wampler Foundation, Thank you for helping the fourth graders make a difference in our world.
