....... CCDS INFORMER
Mrs. Roberts - Headmistress

FROM MRS. ROBERTS

Children racing to the computer lab during recess and
before school plus quotes such as the following were
heard around campus last week. “So what’s this about
sleeping by the phone and getting up at 3:00 AM to do
math?! I’ve never seen Caroline so excited about math
in my life!! I think I may have to hold her off until
6:00 AM though! Sounds like a really neat thing.”

(Stephanie Wilbur) Well, many of our students
participated in a really neat thing. The 5th and 6th
graders entered a worldwide 48-hour math
competition
, and when the 1st and 4th graders heard about it, they jumped
on the bandwagon too. They were playing against 3 or 4 players at a time
from about 20 countries around the world using timed tests via the internet.
Thank you to Mr. Dennis for piloting and bringing this fun event to the
students. It was such a success, I have a feeling that next year the entire
school will be competing.

Open House is this Tuesday night from 5:45 – 7:00. Students are to be
accompanied by their parents to this event. Your family will start in your
child’s classroom to receive an itinerary for visiting all the classrooms and
the Art Show. The itinerary will be stamped as you move from room to room
throughout all the grades and specialty teachers’ rooms. The annual amazing
art show will be on display in Hinde Hall thanks to the efforts of the Art
Parents and Mrs. Koshland
. With the increase in room size and funding
cuts in the public schools, think about bringing a visitor to this event who
may be considering CCDS as an option next year.

......... CLUBS THIS WEEK

MARTIAL ARTS BEGINS MARCH 2

Martial Arts of America is launching a five week program at our school.  The first session is Monday, March 2 at 3:00 - 3:35 pm.  Sign up forms went home last week.

BATON CLUB CONTINUES ON TUESDAYS

DRAMA CLUB HONORS YOUNG ABE LINCOLN
A Note to Drama Club Parents
Our practices for
“Young Abe Lincoln” are going well but we have a lot to learn in the next three
weeks. Everyone should know his/her lines by next week. (Mrs. Lincoln {Kirby}
and Harriet {Katie} may continue to use scripts for part 2 and 3.) Try to encourage
use of expression to give the characters a little personality.
Kentucky accents are great!

One-hour practices start next week. March 10 and March 17 we will
practice until 4:00 so we can go through the whole play. Then there
will be a Monday practice on March 23, 3:00-4:00 pm.

We will have our dress rehearsal on Monday, March 23 from 3:00 to 4:00 pm
since we will perform for the school the next morning at 10:00 a.m. and for the
parents at 7:00 p.m. Please sign up to help at one or more of these practices.

My thanks to Kathy Kennelly (Katie’s grandmother) for helping at every practice
and giving me moral support.

I would like another parent or two to help March 10 and 17. I need a costume
coordinator...I have brought a lot of costumes from our garage storage closet
that need pressing and care. If a parent could be at the practice she could assign
and fit costumes without our having to stop the whole practice. Also, I need a
parent or two backstage at each performance to keep order, help with costume
emergencies, etc. Please call me to volunteer or speak to me after practice.
My telephone is 435-1760.

The SCENERY WORKSHOP will be Saturday March 21, 1:00-3:00 pm.

We will create a log cabin interior using corrugated “Log” paper , etc.

I am excited about producing our play in connection with the Lincoln
Bicentennial. We may be the only Coronado group doing something!

Please, please, rehearse with your child....it really makes a difference in the
success of the practice. On the back of this sheet is the cast of characters.
Three children have double parts.....please note and mark the scripts for them.
Let me know if they lose their script....disaster! I can make a new one.

Thanks for your help and support,
Betsy Vernetti and Kathy Kennelly

......... CELL PHONE POLICY

A new problem has come to my attention, which is an out growth of our changing
times.  The 2009-2010 Parent/Student Handbook will address this problem, but in
the meantime I need your support.  Many children are bringing cell phones to
school.  These may be necessary if children are walking home, but they are not to
be used at school and the school cannot accept any responsibility for damage or
loss of these phones.  As always, any calls that a child needs to make during the
school day should be placed through the office phone with their teacher’s
permission.  This has always been the rule, but we are finding that some students
are texting during school and going into the restrooms to text or make phone calls.
Along that line of thought, arranging play dates etc. should be done before a child
comes to school not when school is dismissing.  (The loading zone has enough
problems without waiting for students to call their parents to arrange a play dates
at the last minute.   So bottom line, while on the school grounds, cell phones
should be in the students’ backpacks at all times.  I will be talking to the children
about this, and I would appreciate your support from home.

As always - thank you for your support. Mrs. Roberts
